Description This Cowichan-inspired pattern for matching hats and mittens, knitted circularly, is written for four sizes: 4-6 years (Small), 8 years to small adult (Medium), medium to large adult (Large), extra-large adult (Extra-Large). Each size features a different traditional motif. The pattern has theory boxes, tutorial photographs, charts, a list of abbreviations, and a book list for further reading. Featured Techniques: Avoiding the purl crescent in ribbing, weaving with 2 yarns in the right hand. Gauge: Knitted at 14 stitches per 4 incheson 10 1/2 needles, these projects are quick and fun to make! Each size features a different motif, used in both the hat and the mittens. I have chosen Brown Sheep Company’s Lamb’s Pride Bulky for these designs, as this yarn is a single-ply like the original yarns. The yarn approximates the weight used for the traditional Cowichan sweaters (albeit a bit thinner than the traditional). I used colors in the brown range, Sandy Heather, Sable, and Cream. Needles: All you need is a set of US size 10.5 double-pointed needles and a 16″ circular needle. Notions: Stitch markers, a stitch holder, and a tapestry needle.
