Description This huge tree ranges from 5 to 15m in height, while usually being between 9 and 12m. The easily recognised broad bottle-shaped trunk can have a diameter that exceeds 5m. It is found between Broome in Western Australia and Catherine in the Northern Territory. Indigenous Australians obtained water from hollows in the tree, used the white powder that fills the seed pods as a food that is said to have an agreeable taste like cream of tartar, and employed the leaves as medicine. Today its nuts are the basis for artwork, while the leaves may have a future as food because of their high iron content. It is deciduous, losing its leavings during the dry winter period and producing new foliage and large white flowers between December and May. The Boab is related to the Madagascan and African Adansonia species known as baobabs.
